The author of the following work is an English Statesman who was born in 1798, and is consequently now seventy-four years of age. He served a long time in the House of Commons under the title of Sir John Walsh, having succeeded his father as Baronet in 1825. He was M. P. for Sudbury in 1830 - '34 and again in 1838 - 40, and was M. P. for Radnorshire from 1840 to 1865, when he retired from public life. In 1868 he was raised to the peerage with the title of Lord Ormathwaite. In politics he is a Liberal Conservative. In a note prefixed to the English edition of his book he says: 'I must preface these pages by a few words of explanation. The decay of my eyesight has within the last year incapacitated me from reading or writing.
